This piece is a replica of an Astrolabe.
This ancient instrument was used by the Spanish Armada to navigate using the sun and stars.
In 1588 the Spanish Galleon “The Santa Maria De La Rosa” sought shelter in the Blasket Sound ( between the mainland of the Dingle Peninsula and the Blasket Island ). The stormy weather caused the ship to hit rocks and sank with the loss of 296 men.
The top of the pendant displays an Angel for protection and also a Maltese cross.
